Spoon!

Last night one of my favorite bands, Spoon, played at the Ogden Theater. That last time I saw them live was in 2007 at the Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks Amphitheater. I have seen many bands live but Spoon is one of the few that I feel that I Have to see every time they come into town. Last night further cemented that requirement. When listening it is as if their rhythm syncs with my life’s own, unheard beat .

The show began at 8pm. The two intro acts deafened the crowds ears with music that could have been enjoyable if they had been at a lower, decent level. Despite years of concert going it was my first show at the Ogden. At first I was a little underwhelmed. For it to be such a fixture of the Denver concert scene it came off as a little worn down and acoustically lacking. The next show that I attend there I hope to listen from a different vantage and see how that affects the experience.

There were a few annoyances throughout the show. It seems that many people have never bothered to learn concert going edicate. Pushing through groups of people without even an “excuse me,” talking nonstop through multiple songs like valley-girls at the coffee shop, and general douche behavior. And as always my biggest annoyance was theĀ  inconsiderate a-holes who feel that because they feel the need to get high, everyone else should have to bear the stench of their foul pot-smoke. I hate these people. I don’t pay good money to have to put up with your disgusting drug. I do not care what you do at home, out of the public. Kill yourself (please) for all I care. But when in public do not bring it out. These issues did not ruin the show but do show a pattern that make paying and going to shows a harder decision these days.

My fears however, were completely blown away when Spoon took stage. It was immediately evident that their sound people were true pro’s. I could hear every instrument and vocal near perfectly. I was anxious to see if their set would be a heavy play list from their most recent album Transference or a mixture of their classic songs with the new material mixed in. I was hoping for the latter. The powers that be were kind last night and I was able to hear almost every song I wished for. For two hours the band transported me to a higher level. I know they tend to play longer sets but I was even surprised at last nights length, I loved it as well. I cannot describe how amazing a performance it was. You really have to experience it yourself to fully understand. So yes, I highly recommend seeing this band the first chance you get. I also appreciated the stage set up. Light bulbs strewn across the stage were just one thing that made the performance very special. Little things like that show how the band perfects its presence with every new tour.

The show finished a little after midnight and I was home getting settled into bed by one. My alarm was set for 5am to get up for work but after such an amazing experience it was well worth the sleep deprivation. I cannot wait for them to return and they have not even left town yet!
